Koi Types
Maruten Goshiki
A Maruten Goshiki is a striking form of Goshiki distinguished by a separate red head marking, or maruten, set apart from the main body pattern. In Japanese koi, Goshiki is known for combining Kohaku-style beni with a darker, often reticulated base that can show shades of blue, gray, or black depending on the fish and its stage of development. The appeal of a Maruten Goshiki lies in that contrast: the clean, intentional head spot adds focus at the front of the koi, while the body carries the richer, more layered character that gives Goshiki its depth and complexity among Nishikigoi varieties.
A well-balanced Maruten Goshiki should have a clearly defined maruten marking, strong beni quality, and a body pattern that complements rather than competes with the head. The best examples show harmony between the red pattern and the darker underlying ground, with skin that appears clean and lustrous in the water. For collectors drawn to Japanese koi with both refinement and visual intensity, Maruten Goshiki offers a very distinctive presence, blending the elegance of traditional pattern placement with the dramatic color depth that makes Goshiki so memorable.
How are koi packaged for shipping?
Each koi is double-bagged with oxygen and shipped in an insulated, temperature-controlled box.
Do I need to be home when it arrives?
Yes — someone 18 or older needs to be available to receive the shipment as soon as it arrives. Prompt unboxing and acclimation is important for the fish’s health.
What happens in bad weather?
We may delay shipment during extreme weather to protect the koi, and will let you know if that happens.
Can I combine multiple koi into one shipment?
Yes — multiple purchases can typically be combined into a single shipment. Ask us about holding your koi if you’re still deciding on others.
Factors we account for
- Koi size and quantity — larger or multiple fish need more water volume and larger boxes.
- Box weight — water, oxygen, and insulation add real, billable weight.
- Distance and destination — domestic vs. international, and how remote the delivery address is.
- Season and weather — extreme heat or cold requires heat packs or extra insulation to protect the fish in transit.
- Speed of delivery — live animals ship overnight or via expedited air cargo, never standard ground.
