What Is a Sanke Koi?
Sanke (SAHN-keh) is short for Taisho Sanshoku, which means “three colors of the Taisho era.” A Sanke has a white body, called the shiroji, with a red pattern, called hi, and small black markings, called sumi.
The variety was developed in Japan during the Taisho era (1912–1926). You can think of a Sanke as a Kohaku with black accents added on top. Along with Kohaku and Showa, it is one of the Gosanke, the three varieties that win most major koi shows.
Sanke Patterns and Types
Like every koi, each Sanke is one of a kind. These are the names you’ll see most often:
- Classic Sanke: a Kohaku-style red pattern with black accents on the white and the red.
- Tancho Sanke: a single round red spot on the head, with black accents on an otherwise white body.
- Maruten Sanke: a separate round red spot on the head, plus red on the body.
- Doitsu Sanke: a Sanke with few or no scales, which makes the colors look especially clean and bold.
- Ginrin Sanke: a Sanke with sparkling, reflective scales.
Black that sits on white skin is called tsubo sumi. Black that sits on top of red is called kasane sumi. Many collectors prefer tsubo sumi, because it gives the cleanest contrast.
What to Look for When Buying a Sanke
A great Sanke needs a great Kohaku pattern first, then well-placed black on top. Look for:
- Clean white skin. Bright, snowy white with no yellow tint.
- Deep, even red. The hi should be one consistent shade, with sharp edges.
- Glossy, crisp black. The sumi should be deep and lacquer-like, with sharp edges, not gray or smudged.
- Black in the right places. On a Sanke, the black sits on the body, mostly on the back and shoulders. A clean head without black is the classic look.
- Balance. Small black accents spread evenly along the back look better than one heavy patch.
- Fins. White fins are classic. A few thin black stripes on the front fins are fine.
Keep in mind that a young Sanke’s black is often still developing. Black can come up, fade or move as the koi grows, which is one reason older Sanke with settled patterns cost more.
How Much Does a Sanke Koi Cost?
A Sanke’s price depends mostly on its size, age and how good its pattern is. Here’s what our Japanese Sanke cost (October 2026):
- 22″ (3 years): $1,500 to $1,800, typically about $1,800
- 25″ to 27″ (3–4 years): $2,000 to $2,500, typically about $2,500
Overall, our Sanke range from $1,500 to $2,500, with most selling for about $1,800. For prices across every variety, see our koi price guide.
Sanke vs. Showa vs. Kohaku
All three Gosanke varieties have red and white. A Kohaku has no black at all. A Sanke is a white koi with small black accents on its body, but usually no black on its head. A Showa is a black koi with red and white over it: its black wraps around the body, covers part of the head, and darkens the base of its front fins. An easy rule is to look at the head and the front fins. Black there usually means Showa. See all the varieties in our guide to types of koi, or shop Kohaku koi for sale.

Sanke FAQs
How much is a Sanke koi?
At Toyoma Koi, hand-selected Japanese Sanke cost $1,500 to $2,500, and most sell for about $1,800. Larger, older Sanke with clean, settled patterns cost the most.
What does Sanke mean?
Sanke is short for Taisho Sanshoku, which means “three colors of the Taisho era.” The three colors are white, red and black.
What is the difference between Sanke and Showa?
A Sanke is a white koi with small black accents and usually no black on its head. A Showa is a black-based koi with black on its head and at the base of its front fins.
Will my Sanke's black pattern change?
Often, yes. The black on a young Sanke can come up, fade or shift for a few years as the koi matures. An older Sanke’s pattern is more settled, which is part of why it costs more.
Do you ship Sanke koi nationwide?
