25002 Sanke 2 Year Female 20" SOLD

A Sanke, or Taisho Sanshoku, is one of the three major classic varieties of Japanese koi, valued for its elegant combination of white, red, and black. Built on a Kohaku foundation, a Sanke features a clean white base with red pattern overlaid by sumi markings that add contrast and sophistication without overpowering the fish. Unlike Showa, Sanke is not black-based, so the white ground remains essential to the variety’s refined, open appearance. A well-balanced Sanke should show strong shiroji, even beni, and sumi placed in a way that complements the pattern with clarity and restraint.

What makes Sanke so admired is its balance of beauty and composure. The variety has a lighter, more polished feel than heavier black-based koi, yet the addition of sumi gives it depth and character beyond a traditional Kohaku. Clean skin, graceful body shape, and thoughtful pattern distribution are all part of a strong overall impression. For collectors looking for Japanese koi with timeless appeal, Sanke remains one of the most respected forms of Nishikigoi, offering a classic blend of elegance, contrast, and lasting visual harmony.
